Tees Valley Sport U16 Boys and Girls Tournament
13th April 2006
Tees Valley Sport organised a countywide basketball tournament to promote basketball within our region. Teams from Hartlepool, Stockton, Middlesbrough and Darlington all took part in this action packed day held at Norton School.
The HEAT teams (including two girls and one boys teams) were all very excited as this was to be their debuts for their home town club could not wait to get started and it wasn’t long until the girls were in action winning their first game quite easily.
However the boys had to wait well over an hour to taste success, as there were two groups for the boy’s teams.
| Girls | Boys Pool A | Boys Pool B |
| Grangefield | Darlington B | Grangefield |
| HEAT A | Northfield | Darlington A |
| HEAT B | Egglescliffe | Nunthorpe |
| Acklam | Conyers | Acklam |
All throughout the day ‘Team HEAT’ made plenty of noise and not just on the court, the forever growing HEAT supporters who are the loudest and most dedicated loyal fans I have ever known showed their support for their team even making up songs on the spot to will their team on not to mention showing great sportsmanship by cheering on and encouraging their opponents and with the girls going un-beaten all day and the boys making the semi final stages their support was much welcomed by all the players and coaches.
Coach Robinson’s enthusiasm and high expectations of the boys helped carry them through the tournament but the boys fell to the hands of the eventual winners, a team from Stockton who were much stronger and a year older (some two) than the HEAT boys but that didn’t stop them putting in a mouth watering display of basketball that went right down to the last second. HEAT left the court in defeat but played their hearts out and took their loss with honour.
The girl’s teams were a different story, they were untouchable and it was HEAT A V HEAT B who would decide who won the Girls Tournament with HEAT A showing pure grit and determination to edge it. Coach’s Weatherill and Fisher were both ecstatic with the quality of both teams. Coach Fisher said ‘ I have never known a group of girls so up for a game of basketball in all my life and the support coming from the younger players, parents and even other teams was electric’
