Kids V Parents
10th September 2006
Hartlepool HEAT Juniors had a chance to show off their skills to their family in a fantastic day that was enjoyed by all who took part.
The afternoon was a huge success with over 50 people in attendance. The Juniors who had been working extra hard in training to put one over on their parents were really up for it but were completely shocked when Coach Anth defected and pulled a jersey on for ‘Team Parents’.
With Coach A. helping organise the parents the game was ready to start.
‘Team Parents’ score first with an excellent basket from Sharon but Dylan hits straight back for ‘The Kids’. A quick reply from Dave gave the Parents a 2-point advantage but it didn’t last long as Laura scores two fast breaks in a row followed up by excellent shooting by Besh to give ‘The Kids’ a 5-point lead at 9-4.
Jeff then goes to the basket for a lay-up but is fouled by Laura; unfortunately for ‘Team Parents’ he misses both. A strong rebound from ‘The Kids’ see’s Erin go strong at the other end pilling more pressure on ‘Team Parents’ The next minute see’s Team Parents’ start to get to grips with the game with good passing and moving and with a drive to the basket Bill is fouled by Rebecca Mee and goes to the line for two.
He misses both but Jackie gets the rebound and puts it in as the ‘Team Parents’ bench goes wild! Another fast break from ‘The kids’ and a converted lay- up from Rebecca Mee has the Parents silenced as ‘The Kids’ bench goes nuts. The last two minutes of the quarter though was all ‘Team Parents’ with Trina, Edie and Dave combining for 6-points to tie the game 14-14.
The Parents dominated the end of the 1st quarter but ‘The Kids’ controlled whole of the 2nd. Besh came out all guns blazing with 2-quick baskets and with ‘Team Parents’ missing another two free throws they slowly started to fall behind. Then Dave who was everywhere on the court all game popped up with an excellent basket to bring some life the Parents. It was short lived though as Laura and Rebecca Mee combined to give ‘The Kids’ a 22-16 lead at half-time.
‘The Kids’ were everywhere for the first five minutes of the 3rd with only Rosey standing out by far for ‘Team Parents’ with a superb basket while ‘The Kids’ went on a 8-0 run with baskets from James Andrews, Lewis and Tommy Fenny. With Rosey leading ‘Team Parents’ and great support from the bench the Parents managed to turn things around in the last 5 minutes of the 3rd with great defence and excellent basketball. Baskets from Jackie, Jane, Dave and Ann gave the Parents some hope going into the last quarter with the score standing 26-30.
What a 4th quarter! End to end basketball, but training clearly pays off as ‘The Kids’ managed to make their lay-ups and shots were as lack of practice was the downfall as ‘Team Parents’ couldn’t have bought a basket from the shop in the first 8 minutes!!!
When ‘Team Parents’ did manage to score it was Rosey who stopped ‘The Kids’ run of 12 unanswered points including baskets from James Andrews, Jess and Laura. Coach Anth called a time out and ‘Team Parents’ took a look at the score. 42-28
Coach A’s directions were simply, score and stop them scoring!
Time Out
The plan was working perfectly as Dave scored a couple of great baskets assisted by Rosey and when Coach A put himself into the game he helped out with a couple of points even though Poppy was fouling him! Jane took the lead next and added a couple of points but it wasn’t to be and as the final whistle blew ‘The Kids’ were loud and proud of their victory. 42-34
Even though ‘Team Parents’ lost they could do nothing but praise the young rising stars and could not believe in the standard of the basketball from the juniors most of whom had only been playing a few months.
Before everyone was allowed to help themselves to the buffet provided, it was time for the awards. During and after the game people was asked to keep an eye out for someone who they would nominate for the MVP, someone who stood out among everyone else and was involved all throughout the game. There was only one name mentioned by everyone Rosey!!
We would just like to thank everyone who helped out in organising the day it was a fantastic event and we look forward to the re-match in which the parents have promised pay back, Juniors you have been warned.
