Heat were Velocity’s guests in their 2nd Teesside League Fixture and their 1st away game of the new season.
Heat with a five of Donnison, Thomas, Turner, McKenzie and Robinson were quick of the mark with a fast break from Robinson against a 2-3 Velocity zone including Tappenden, W.Tovey, L.Tovey, A.Tovey and Baister.
Velocity replied through L.Tovey but Heat moved the ball well and Turner drained the 3 before Robinson made a strong drive to the basket. McKenzie following the lead and drove hard to the basket and was fouled. He misses the first but rops the second.
Heat up 8-2
Heat continue to pass the ball well and Turner and Robinson keep the points coming with outside shooting while Thomas goes to work inside giving Heat an 18-8 cushion but with a minute left Velocity go on a 7 point streak and close the gap to 18-15.
Start of the 2nd and Velocity pull it back within one point as L.Tovey scores a strong lay-up, Heat are quick to answer with Ray before Baister for the home team gets the And1 and makes a 3 point play that ties the game 20-20.Turner then displays some excellent shooting and rebounding and Heat stop Velocity from scoring. Robinson then goes on a 9-point streak but Velocity hit back with L.Tovey and Baister again putting it in from under the basket. Thomas and Ord then combine well to give Heat the edge as Heat lead 40-34.
With Heat up by six they switched to man to pull away from Velocity it worked and after four minutes Heat had scored 8-points to Velocity’s 4 through more fast breaks from Turner and outside inside play from Thomas. Velocity had no answer to the man Defence or to Robinson who dropped 18 points helping Heat to pull away 65-49.
The 4th saw Heat go 5-points unanswered in the first three minutes due to baskets from Ord and Reed, Velocity then scored with Baister, McKenzie for Heat soon started scoring supported well by Reed. Velocity then managed to match Heat and won the quarter 18-16 but the damage was done in the 3rd and Heat pick up their 1st Teesside win.
An excellent game played well by both teams.
