I am ecstatic to announce that Hartlepool HEAT has been awarded Sport England Clubmark and is an England Basketball 3-Star Accredited Club. The club becomes only the 100th club in the whole country at the moment with this award and currently the only club in Teesside. This is huge achievement for our club that is just over two years old and only stared with one session a week!
Well done everyone!
HEAT just too HOT for Hornets!
Local pride and bragging rights wasn’t the only thing at stake as Hartlepool HEAT hosted their fiercest rivals Hartlepool Hornets in the last game of the season in the Teesside League on Friday evening. Victory for HEAT would not only see them coast to their first League title in only their second season but also League and Cup double winners after winning the Teesside League Division 1 Cup earlier in the season. A win for the current league holders Hornets though would see the title leave Hartlepool and go to the Tees Lions who were looking to outshine HEAT by claiming the title in their first season something which HEAT narrowly lost out on doing last season.
Hornets opened the scoring through James but a long 3-pointer from McKenzie who has been outstanding all season lifted HEAT and then in front of their usual large home crowd at Manor College of Technology, HEAT fired back in the form Colmer and Robinson with 13 unanswered points!
Norton and Burrell combined well to get Hornets scoring again but Colmer who was unstoppable replied instantly, starting yet another run for HEAT who would go 11 points unanswered. This time it was Barrow and Turner who piled the pressure on. Osborne did score again for the visitors but Ord made a huge impact for HEAT with solid defence and two big baskets including a 3 point play!
HEAT lead 29-14.
Hornets started to find their feet a little more in the second period and scored more consistently with Burrell and James working well inside the HEAT zone. An early time-out was called by Robinson who re-grouped HEAT after a sloppy couple of minutes in which Hornets looked like pulling a run together. Within seconds he got the answer he wanted from his players when Barrow and Turner hit back. Both teams had good scoring spells trading basket for basket and Hornets managed to win this quarter 22-21, however HEAT could have won it by one had they hit their free throws.
At the start of the third Hornets trailed 36-50 and any hope of an early fight back were squashed as HEAT outscored them 13-4 in the opening four minutes including two big 3-pointers from Robinson. Burrell working inside and Norton with deadly shooting were Hornets main threat, making sure Hornets competed throughout the third period but the quartet of Colmer, Errington, Robinson and Turner made sure HEAT were in full control.
Hornets only trailed by 16 points going into the last 10 minutes and started well with a strong drive from Harrington. HEAT responded with five points from Colmer before Ord and Turner combined for six points giving HEAT a superior 23 point cushion at 88-65. Norton drove strong for Hornets and was fouled on his way to line but he failed to convert both free throws and although him and Osborne combined well together for seven points Hornets were still trailing by 20 points at 93-73.
With two minutes remaining Robinson called another time out and made some changes to the team, bringing on Anderson who instantly found Musgrave with a long pass which started a run of 16 points including four from Anderson, seven from Musgrave and five from Turner who took HEAT past the 100 point mark on his way to a huge 30 point personal haul and a comfortable 108-77 win.
Carl Colmer was nominated the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for his overall team performance and picked up 26 personal points on the way.Adam Turner was the games leading scoring with 30 personal.
